The Automotive Materials Laboratory (AML) provides specialized services on metals, non-metals, petroleum products, brake fluids, coolants, ambient air quality, non-regulated pollutants from vehicle exhaust, alternate fuel, vehicle components, etc. Specialized services include; Failure analysis, Microstructure Analysis, Determination of Mechanical Properties, Fractography, Life Prediction of virgin and regrind polymers, Vehicle exhaust particulate matter analysis, etc. The various test facilities available at AML are as follows.

Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) Quanta 200:
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) capable of operating in environmental mode for obtaining high resolution and high magnification images of micro as well as nanostructures. The SEM is also equipped with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS or EDAX) for elemental analysis of micro constituents on conductive as well as non conductive samples. The SEM is extensively used for failure analysis, fractography and coating analysis of metallic as well as nonmetallic components

Universal Testing Machine (UTM):
Instron 5582 model (100 kN capacity) with special accessories such as environmental chamber (temperature range -60 to 300 deg C.), long travel extensometer, longitudinal and transverse extensometers, peel strength fixtures etc. Tensile tests, compression tests and bend tests carried out for measurement of UTS, YS, % Elongation, r-value, n-value, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, plastic strain ratio (r-value) measurements, true stress-strain curves etc.

Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES):
Quantitative elemental analysis of ferrous as well as nonferrous materials

Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) Spectrometer
Identification of polymers, additives and reinforcing agents, analysis of oils, materials investigation for failure analysis

X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectroscopy:
Analysis of Elements including Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ca, Br, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ti, Ga, Rb, Y, Zr, Pd, Ag, In, Sn, La Se, Sr, Mo, Cr, Cd, Sb, Ba, and Pb

Ion Chromatograph (IC):
Detection of Anions- fluoride, chloride, bromide, sulphate, nitrate & phosphate and Cations-sodium, ammonium, potassium, magnesium & calcium
Thermal Optical Carbon Analyzer :
For evaluation of Carbon fractions based on temperature (Organic Carbon-OC1, OC2, OC3 & OC4 and Elemental Carbon-EC1, EC2 & EC3) using Thermal Optical Reflectance (TOR) technique.

High Resolution Gas Chromatograph (HRGC) with Automated Thermal Desorber (ATD):
Analysis of soluble and insoluble organic fraction from vehicle exhaust particulate matter as well as analysis of volatile organic compounds
